Fosterling vs. Sparkie: Which Fits Your Rescue?
Compare Sparkie and Fosterling on pricing, foster workflows and adoption tools, with a fair look at where each fits and what to check before switching.
If your rescue runs through foster homes rather than kennels, Sparkie is speaking to your kind of team. It describes itself as software designed specifically by and for foster-based animal rescues. Fosterling also puts foster homes at the center of everyday work.
This post is written by the Fosterling team, so read it with that in mind. We've included reasons to choose Sparkie, not just reasons to choose us. Sparkie details below were checked against its public website in November 2026.
The short version
- Sparkie brings animals, people, organizations, tasks, applications and contracts together. Its pricing uses average monthly intakes over the previous 12 months, with the corresponding rate locked for a year. It is worth trying if microchip registry integrations and an intake-based budget matter to you.
- Fosterling is free forever for up to 25 animals in care, with no card needed. Adopted animals don't count, and staff seats are unlimited on every plan. The Rescue plan is $39/month. It is a good fit if you want a lasting free option, a foster portal and a public lost and found board.
Pricing side by side
Pricing checked November 2026 against Sparkie's pricing page. Its homepage advertises a free 90-day trial.
| Sparkie | Fosterling | |
|---|---|---|
| Free option | 90-day trial | Free forever for up to 25 animals in care; no card needed |
| Published monthly plans | Small $25; Medium $50; Large $75; Extra Large $100 | Rescue $39/month |
| What determines the tier | Average monthly intakes over the past 12 months | The free plan counts animals currently in care, not adopted animals |
| Rate predictability | Corresponding intake-based rate locked for a year, even if the rescue grows | Published plan pricing; no per-seat charge |
Sparkie's Small plan covers 0 to 10 average monthly intakes, Medium covers 11 to 20, and Large covers 21 to 50. Its pricing page also advertises 20% off yearly billing. Those details were checked in November 2026; confirm the current rate and your intake band before subscribing.
Intakes and animals in care tell different stories. A rescue that places animals quickly can have many monthly intakes and a small roster. A long-stay rescue can have few intakes and many animals still in care. Use your own records to compare the two models.
What both do well
Sparkie's features page and FAQ describe workflows that overlap with Fosterling:
- Animal records and placement tracking
- People records for adopters, fosters, volunteers and donors
- Foster care management
- Applications and digital adoption contracts or agreements
- Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet publishing
- Donation records and volunteer coordination
Shared feature names don't tell you how many steps a task takes. Ask a coordinator and a foster to try the parts they will actually use.
Where Sparkie is ahead
- Microchip registry integrations. Sparkie explicitly advertises these alongside its adoption-site integrations. If registry work is a daily headache, ask which registries it supports and have the team demonstrate your process.
- A year of intake-based rate certainty. Its published pricing says the corresponding rate is locked for a year even if the rescue grows. As checked in November 2026, that is a useful budgeting promise for a team expecting more intakes.
- A long evaluation window. The advertised 90-day trial gives you time to follow animals from intake through adoption before deciding.
- Processor choice. Sparkie's homepage says it does not force rescues to use its payment processor or buy particular microchips. That is worth discussing if you already have arrangements you want to keep.
Where Fosterling stands out
A free plan you can keep
If you have up to 25 animals in care, Fosterling is free forever. No card is needed, adopted animals don't count, and staff seats are unlimited on every plan. You can give the team access without working out who should share a login.
A dedicated foster portal
Fosters can send updates through their own portal, without a staff login. Capacity, preferences and current placements stay in one view for the coordinator.
Public adoption and lost-pet tools
Fosterling's public adoption pages, Petfinder feeds and Adopt-a-Pet feeds work today. Its public lost and found board cross-matches reports by description, location and microchip. Take a look at the board.
An assistant for routine work
Ops Copilot can help you check what's due this week or set a reminder. Fosterling also supports donations through Stripe and spreadsheet import, so you can bring your existing animal records with you.
These are things to test in Fosterling, not a claim that Sparkie cannot meet similar needs. If a workflow is essential, ask to see it in both products.
Which one should you pick?
Sparkie is a good fit if microchip registry integrations are important, you prefer budgeting around average intakes, or you want a long trial before making a paid commitment. Its Small plan may also be attractive to a low-intake rescue that needs paid software.
Fosterling is a better fit if you:
- have up to 25 animals in care and want software that stays free,
- want foster households to send updates through their own portal,
- need public adoption pages and a community lost and found board,
- want help with admin through Ops Copilot.
Pick a normal week, not an ideal one, for your test. Import a few records, review an application and ask a foster to send an update. You can start Fosterling free without a card.
